Case study number one

Jupiter Hotel

You know what needs to be done. But you simply don’t have the time or resources to make it I was the General Manager of the Jupiter Hotel for almost 14 years. I arrived 5 months after the hotel was opened and was their 4th general manger.

During my tenure, the Jupiter became an iconic Portland Hotel, offering clients a unique experience in urban hospitality. Embracing the city’s motto of “Keep Portland Weird”, the Jupiter embraced the quirkiness of the city and placed it front and center. Understanding that the city’s reputation was the demand generator, and as the new millennial traveler was looking for unique and authentic experiences, we moved to provide just that.

The Jupiter was the leader and often-times, the creator of trends in boutique lodging. From forging strong bonds with our community to embracing the newness of Cannabis Tourism, the Jupiter created a following that placed it as a market leader in the Portland Hospitality scene. Continuously, the Jupiter outperformed the competitive set, as well as its mid-tier market on the STAR report.

All are Welcome. This was the guiding philosophy at the Jupiter. Understanding that hospitality knows no color or race or sex or identity, we moved to create a place where expression of the self was encouraged and all were treated with respect. We specifically targeted and reached out to non traditional groups and people. We spoke their language of inclusiveness, of individualism and of acceptance.

We marketed to the LGBTQ communities, to millennials, we focused heavily on the international traveler, partnering with local, state and federal agencies. In short, we returned to the days where hospitality and not profit, was the focus. We treated guests as they wanted to be treated, we encouraged our staff to share “their” Portland with the world, we hired people based on fit and personality rather than looks and technical ability. We built a hotel where we would want to stay.

In 2018, the Jupiter once again challenged itself and opened a new hotel. Located directly next to the Jupiter Hotel, the Jupiter Next offered upgraded luxury while embracing the basic values and principles as the original hotel..
